Lenthof Nijmegen roof garden

Green roof garden

The Lenthof is an apartment complex combined with a supermarket, located in Lent, north of Nijmegen. The roof garden is located on the roof of the supermarket and has a limited load-bearing capacity. The space is surrounded on three sides by homes on four floors. The open side of the space on the east side is oriented towards a parking lot. The entrances to the homes are on galleries, which border the roof garden.

The roof garden forms its own soft and green inner world. The planting of trees, shrubs and flowering perennials grows on softly rounded elevations and the paving meanders through it like a river. Two sheltered seating areas have been created, so that residents can sit in the shade or in the sun.

Shelter in the garden

Trees and shrubs provide shelter in the garden, the four trees form a roof in places where you can take shelter. Multi-stemmed ornamental cherries with a loose growth habit and flowering in spring were chosen. The trees are placed on the columns of the underlying construction, to distribute the weight. The other planting, on raised parts of 60 cm high, also offers, in addition to greenery and colour, distance, back cover and sufficient root space. The planting uses a range of long-flowering perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs that require little maintenance.

The paving consists of strips of grey long concrete stones, which matches the facades, constructed of wooden slats and grey concrete. The gravel in the joints and the edges refer directly to the surrounding river landscape.
