Hardenberg Town Hall

Wheelchair-friendly park
The new town hall is built on a three-story parking garage, designed by Architecten Cie. This keeps the area car-free and green. The garage roof rises a full two meters above the surrounding area. Therefore, the parking garage is nestled within a green hill. The resulting park will take the form of a rolling grassy landscape. Hedges have been planted on the steepest sections. Within these hedges, the largest differences in level are absorbed. A different species is used for each hedge, creating a variety of color and texture.
The trees also provide seasonal variation with their blossoms and autumn colors. In early spring, wide ribbons of spring bulbs add color to the grassy hills. Wheelchair accessibility is a key requirement for the building. All sloping access paths to the building are wheelchair-friendly. Adjacent to Hardenberg's town center is a secluded gravel square featuring the Statue of Liberty by artist Kees Verkade. This slightly lowered space is under a canopy of trees. From this square, a wide staircase leads to the main entrance.
