Design of Lariks roof garden in De Houthaven
Ruimte voor ontmoeting, beweging en ontspanning
In the center of the residential building lies a green, shared rooftop garden for the residents. Commissioned by housing corporation Lieven De Key Buro Mien Ruys designed a varied outdoor space with ample room for meeting, exercise, and relaxation.
A winding path connects the various sections of the garden. Along the route, there are several seating areas, a fitness spot, a raised vegetable bed, and quiet seating spots amidst the greenery. Varying planting heights give the garden a natural relief and create a varied appearance. Trees, perennials, hedges, and climbing plants combine to form a green environment that offers sufficient privacy for the adjacent homes. The planting has a tranquil appearance, with green and white tones as the basis.
The landscaping consists of a carefully chosen combination of Komex semi-paved surfaces, natural tiles, and anthracite-colored pavers. A raised Corten steel planter with a wooden seating edge forms a striking element in the garden. Wooden posts and integrated lighting enhance the character of this central gathering place. Concrete steps, ramps, and wide paths make the different levels easily accessible.
The technical structure is tailored to the load-bearing capacity of the roof. Lightweight materials, including lava and EPS, have been used beneath the paving and planting. The planting beds consist of intensive roof garden substrate with varying layer thicknesses for perennials and trees. A filter fabric, drainage layer, and protective fabric form the basis of the roof structure. In this way, a fully-fledged green outdoor space is created within the technical possibilities of the roof.
