Attractive planting all year round

This project was realized in collaboration with OKRA landscape architects from Utrecht. The master plan included a section of land around the church where a flower garden was to be created. The idea was to create this with strips of flowering plants as a nod to the bulb fields that once extended all the way to the church. The direction of the strip pattern is based on this. The dimensions of the strips are identical to those of a bulb border, and they are neatly separated by a narrow paving stone border. Unlike the bulb fields, which bloom profusely for a short period, the desire here was to create attractive plantings year-round. This meant that concessions had to be made to the exuberance of color.

By choosing long-flowering varieties with distinctive foliage, we aimed to maximize variety and color. The starting point was to have one plant species per lane, with varying transitions to another, similar to bulb fields. Perennials were combined with low, compact shrubs and low, trimmed privet hedges, ensuring color and structure in the planting even in winter. Several large existing trees were retained. To accommodate these trees, the lane pattern was adjusted where necessary.
