Verrijn Stuart Diemen

Verrijn Stuart

Strong design of residual space

This challenging space is situated in the cramped corner of a turnoff and was overgrown with shrubs. Normally, this space receives little attention. In this case, it forms part of the entrance to the Verrijn Stuart business park, and is therefore significant. Buro Mien Ruys created a powerfully designed space: a place that remains in your memory. The water feature for the collection of rainwater has been enlarged and given a clear shape.

Taking management into account

A pattern of hedges encircles the pond, illustrating the dynamics of traffic. The wide hedges are situated on an extremely steep slope. Height differences were accommodated by planting the hedges themselves on steep slopes. This allows the space between the hedges to remain almost level, making the area accessible to machinery. The hedges can easily be trimmed with a mower. By carefully considering the management of the area, such a strongly designed design was possible in this location.
