Greening project

Less than 10 years ago, the shopping street in Dedemsvaart was extensively redesigned according to the shared-space principle. The result, however, is that cars and delivery drivers take up the entire area. People drive (too) fast, and parking is everywhere. A common complaint was that the street was too stony and bare, lacking space for benches and socializing, and thus making the shopping area unattractive. A greening plan was developed in collaboration with local businesses and residents, based on the principle of "stones out, plants in." This was achieved by creating long strips of trimmed hedges and wide borders with flowering plants parallel to the roadway. The offset of the roadway is accentuated by staggering the hedges and flower ribbons. This has a speed-reducing effect and enhances the green appearance: the continuous stone surface is now interrupted by greenery. The selection primarily focuses on good nectar plants, and the existing trees will now be planted (as much as possible) in planting beds, which will benefit their growth and vitality. The first phase was completed in the spring of 2023.
