Upgrade of Leeghwaterpark in Purmerend in full swing
The upgrade of Leeghwaterpark in Purmerend is in full swing! Buro Mien Ruys developed the vision and design for the redesign of this 24-hectare city park. The plans are increasingly taking shape, and work is in full swing on the renewed layout of the park.
A string of beads through the green heart of Purmerend
Great article in the Noordhollands Dagblad! The NHD recently covered the large-scale upgrade of Leeghwaterpark, the 'green lung' of Purmerend. The article describes the construction work and the plans for the park. A new 1,600-meter recreational strip will connect the various sports, play, and relaxation areas. In addition, attention is paid to the new, open layout intended to contribute to a safer park, while also taking the existing flora and fauna into account.
Since the start of the works in the spring of 2026, much has already changed. Old asphalt paths have been removed, and work is underway on the construction of new walking and cycling paths, nature-friendly banks, and revetments. The first new bridge for the northern cycle route has also been installed, and work has started on the installation of the new piping for the event site.
Although Leeghwaterpark currently still resembles a construction site in some places, the first changes are becoming increasingly visible.

Design and vision of Buro Mien Ruys
On behalf of the municipality of Purmerend Buro Mien Ruys established the design and the vision on. Central to the design is a green recreational ribbon that connects the various parts of the park. Existing and new facilities are linked along this ribbon, like beads on a necklace. This creates greater cohesion between the various sports and recreational facilities and strengthens the connection with the surrounding neighborhoods.
With the redesign, Leeghwaterpark will become a more attractive and future-proof city park, with more space for relaxation, exercise, and social interaction. Biodiversity, water storage, and combating heat stress will also be given a prominent place in the renewed design.
The work is still in full swing, but the first changes are already clearly visible. Check out the latest photos of the work below!
